John McCain's selection of Sarah Palin as his Vice Presidential running mate is a brilliant move.
Why?
Because Republican strategists are aware of a big weakness in the Democratic Party: that just a hint of hypocrisy and the use of buzz words like "creationism", "abstinence only education", "pro-gun" and "staunchly pro-life" will reliably send liberals scrambling for their soapboxes, ready to condemn with moral outrage and scorn.
Meanwhile, they've seemingly forgotten the compelling message they've spent months crafting and honing, and in their self-righteous fury, risk providing juicy sound bites to be used against them later in the campaign.
That's right. Sarah Palin is such a stunningly bad choice for VP that it might actually improve McCain's chances of claiming the White House in November.
No longer are we talking about the economy, about the War in Iraq, about torture and about energy. Instead, liberal talking heads, bloggers, and online communities are abuzz with rumors about premarital sex, cover-ups and teen pregnancy as they also try to determine the details of any other possible controversy surrounding Palin.
Yes, Palin is staunchly anti-abortion, anti-sex education, pro-drilling, anti-global warming, pro-gun, possibly an Alaska secessionist, and mocker of Hillary Clinton. But does any of this really matter in the last leg of a crucial election season, when there are much bigger issues at stake?
Yes, her daughter is pregnant and there are other, darker rumors. But a pregnant 17 year-old ought to be a much bigger conflict within the GOP itself. Democrats would be better served by letting conservative factions fight amongst themselves. There is nothing to gain by smugly criticizing someone's family and personal life even if they demonstrate a failure of the candidates views on birth control and sex education – these are not relevant to the election and simply make liberals look bad for dragging the teenage girl through the mud.
You might say, butbutbut, we're just trying to show what a bad decision-maker McCain is that he'd pick such a partner. After all, she is, you'll remind me again with an oh-so-innocent raising of the eyebrows, just a heartbeat away from the presidency (a thinly veiled ageist remark if I ever heard one).
All of these things are true. But they don't matter. Democrats are, once again, letting the discussion get away from them, and allowing Republicans, once again, to frame the debate. Republicans are brilliant at controlling and shaping the message, and despite tailspin after tailspin, the Democrats never quite seem to get that the joke's on them: it's sound and fury, ultimately signifying nothing.
Democrats need to keep a big-picture perspective and ask themselves whether their condemnation of Palin is really going to help them long term.
The best strategy is to stop talking about Palin. Discussing her ad infinitum is likely to yield regressive, hypocritical rhetoric ("she's only being chosen because she's a woman", for example) or gleeful, superior scoffing that doesn't pull anyone toward the Democratic cause.
Instead, it allows McCain the media coverage he's been denied and, more importantly, an opportunity to create new issues late in the game. To allow this discussion to continue more than a day or two is an exercise in self-defeat.
Remember, liberals: we're in a recession McCain refuses to acknowledge, we're in a war he refuses to end, we're supporting a dying energy source McCain intends to prop up, and the next President may have the opportunity to select more than one Supreme Court nominee.
This is what you should be discussing. Don't let the distractions of the moment derail the policy momentum you've been building. Don't let the sound and the fury become the topics we debate.
They signify nothing.

Obama and Joe seem to be doing just that.listening to Joe at a town hall meeting in Flortda he hardly mentioned her just to say he doesn't know her very well.Obama did the same thing and expressed that chidren are off-limits.To me the fan fare from this has just taken the attention off of the GOP convention.But maybe that is what they wanted.It looks like we won't get to hear Bush or Dick speak now because of the hurricane.
